There is a prayer many Christians have prayed for someone they love - and it holds two truths that theology often tells us cannot remain together.
A son has walked away. A sister no longer believes. A friend who once prayed beside you now wants nothing to do with God.
So you pray:
God, do what only you can do. Awaken them. Open their eyes. Overcome the blindness, bondage, and resistance I cannot reach. Let your grace accomplish your saving purpose in them. But do not merely compel an outward surrender. Bring them to see the truth, to desire Christ, and to answer you from a heart made willing and free. Do not let them remain lost-and let their homecoming be genuinely their own.
In that prayer, you are asking God to accomplish what only God can accomplish. But you are not asking him to impose an outward surrender. You want each person to see, understand, and finally desire the Father. You want God to bring them home-and you want each homecoming to be genuinely their own.
Most Christians hear no contradiction in asking for both. The trouble begins when theology tells them they must choose.
Where Calvinism and Arminianism Meet gives both traditions a fair hearing at their strongest. Calvinism rightly insists that salvation begins with God, rests upon grace, and cannot depend finally upon autonomous human achievement. Arminianism rightly insists that response, responsibility, relationship, and love must remain genuinely personal.
Yet both traditions have usually conducted the debate inside a shortened story. Both begin with humanity already fallen. Both ordinarily stop the meaningful work of response and formation at death. Within those boundaries, divine sovereignty and human freedom appear destined to compete.
This book asks what happens when the debate is placed inside the whole biblical story-from the Father's purpose before creation, through the Cross and Resurrection, across the ages of judgment and formation, to the reconciliation of all things in Christ.
Along the way, R. K. Baldwin reopens the classical questions of depravity, election, atonement, grace, perseverance, providence, judgment, and freedom. He presents a vision in which God's purpose is certain without making persons mechanical, grace may be resisted without being eternally defeated, judgment remains morally serious, and the creature's final yes remains personal and uncoerced.
