If your parents grew up in a small American industrial city, and you grew up there, and your children did not, you are part of a demographic event the Census Bureau has been recording for about ninety years.
It has names. Rust Belt. Deindustrialisation. Population decline. None of them is quite right, and this book starts from the number instead: the population figure on a city's own page, which you can watch fall decade by decade.
Three cities carry the argument. Youngstown, where the mills stopped on a single identifiable day. Lorain, where the same thing happened slowly enough that no one could name the moment. And Wheeling, the river town, whose decline followed a different shape again. Together they show that the story told as one event was in fact several, with different causes and different consequences for the people who stayed.
A chapter on what decline looks like at street level moves from the statistics to the specifics: the buildings, the businesses, the schools, and what a place feels like when a third of it has left.
Then the chapter the book is honest enough to title The Question Without a Good Answer, on why the remedies proposed for sixty years have mostly not worked. A closing chapter looks at what has come after the mill in places that found something, and what that actually required.
