A concise, readable history of Casselberry, Florida, from the chain of small lakes that set its property lines to the suburb that grew along US 17-92. It traces the homesteaders and the first subdivision, the settlement of Evergreen, and the fern industry that gave the area its living and its name in the fern country, before following Hibbard Casselberry's sales operation and the two neighbouring towns of which only one survived.
At its centre is the founding bargain that defined the place: a town incorporated in 1940 on the promise that it would levy no property taxes, which held for thirty-six years until residents themselves voted to end it in 1976.
Written from public records, census returns, historical markers and the RICHES digital archive at the University of Central Florida, it anchors its dates to their sources and says plainly where the record disagrees with itself. Ten short chapters, with a timeline and a guide to where the history is still standing.
