A concise, readable history of Altamonte Springs, Florida, from its 1882 founding as a New England winter colony on the shore of Lake Orienta to the fountain-lit downtown of the modern city. It traces the grand Altamonte Hotel and the resort era, the citrus freezes and the fern industry that replaced them, the historic East Altamonte community and the churches and school it built for itself, and the highway-and-mall boom that turned a town of a few hundred into a city of tens of thousands, including the Cranes Roost and Uptown Altamonte redevelopment that the town's long-out-of-print 1995 history could never cover.
Written from public records, the U.S. Census, and the city's own historical markers, it states its sources plainly and shows the reader where the record itself disagrees.
