This book studies how used engine oil is managed and disposed of in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Through surveys, site visits, and interviews with car owners, mechanics, and workshop managers, it finds that used oil is routinely dumped on the ground, into drains, or into waterways, mainly by roadside workshops despite general awareness that this harms the environment. Most people didn't know the oil could be recycled or that dumping it is illegal.The study concludes that Nigeria's laws are adequate but poorly enforced, and recommends recycling/re-refining used oil, stronger enforcement by NESREA, and public awareness campaigns to promote more sustainable disposal practices.
