Proteins are among the most important molecules in living organisms. They provide structural support, catalyze biochemical reactions, transport molecules, transmit signals, regulate gene expression, defend against disease, and coordinate countless cellular processes. A single gene can give rise to multiple protein forms through alternative RNA processing, genetic variation, proteolytic processing, and post-translational modifications. Proteins can also change their abundance, structure, location, and interactions in response to cellular signals and environmental conditions. As a result, the proteome is dynamic and constantly changing.
This book begins with the fundamental concepts of proteins, genes, genomes, and proteomes. It then explores protein synthesis, structure, folding, stability, and molecular interactions. Special attention is given to post-translational modifications and proteoforms because these processes are essential for understanding how proteins acquire diverse functions.
