The first day is rarely the hard part.
It gets described as starting a new school, which makes it sound like one thing. It is closer to nine things arriving on the same morning, and the number is the point rather than any single item on it.
One teacher becomes ten. One room becomes a building with corridors. A walk with you becomes a bus on their own. Being the oldest becomes being the youngest, overnight, which is a larger demotion than adults remember.
None of those is difficult on its own. All of them in the same week is a lot for anybody.
A short book about the six weeks. Why the gap is harder than the first day, and what is worth doing in a summer everybody wants to spend preparing.

What the six weeks are actually doing - no school to go to, so no evidence arrives either way, and the imagination has six weeks and no competition.
Why the friendship reshuffle is the thing they are actually worried about, and the one nobody can answer in August.
Why you will be absolutely fine closes the subject, and asks them to agree.
Why filling the summer with preparation produces a child who is sick of it before they start.
Doing the journey, twice, in the holidays. The bus, the walk, the gate, the way back.
Practising the small mechanical things - the padlock, the bus pass, buying something with a card. Most of the visible September wobbling is admin rather than emotion, and admin can be rehearsed in a kitchen.
Letting them buy their own equipment, including the choices you would not make.
Keeping the summer ordinary, and buying the uniform late so it is not a countdown on a door.
Naming the worry once, then leaving it. Naming it once means it is sayable. Raising it weekly means it is looming.
Letting the first fortnight be bad, said in advance, because a predicted difficulty is a completely different experience from an unexpected one.
What to say in the summer, and two that raise it.
And the part nobody says: it ends for you as well. Seven years of a playground you knew, a teacher who knew your child's name, and a walk that was fifteen minutes of somebody talking to you. All of it stops on the same Friday.
That is a substantial change in your life, and it arrives disguised as an administrative one.
Almost all of the advice here is practical and almost none of it is emotional. That is deliberate. Competence is what reduces the imagining, and the imagining is the problem.
Do the bus journey. Buy the bag late.
For the parent, not the child. Sixty-four pages, small enough for a coat pocket.
