When they come out: the kitchen doorway, the drink they did not need, the feet on you on the sofa. That is the visit. Not making it an event is most of the skill.
Things to say through a door, and two that shut it harder.
Separating the two worries that get treated as one - that they are pulling away, and what might be happening in there.
And the part underneath, which is a loss nobody offers condolences for. It looks from outside like progress. It is progress. It is also a bereavement, and it is allowed to be both.
The aim is not an open door. It is being somebody they still consider telling, in three years, when it matters.
Which reframes most of the small decisions. Knocking builds it. Going in unannounced spends it. Leaving toast builds it.
They are not leaving. They are going upstairs.
Knock. Leave the toast.
