The Brahma Samaj (A Short History) offers a foundational exploration of one of the most influential religious and social reform movements in modern Indian history. Founded in the 19th century as a monotheistic response to contemporary Hindu practices, the Brahma Samaj played a pivotal role in the Indian Renaissance. This work meticulously documents the movement's evolution, from its inception under the leadership of Raja Ram Mohan Roy to its later developments and organizational schisms.
The narrative focuses on the lives and theological contributions of key leaders such as Debendranath Tagore and Keshub Chandra Sen, examining their efforts to reconcile traditional Indian spirituality with rationalism and universalism. By tracing the movement's internal struggles and its broader impact on Indian society, Manilal Chhotalal Parekh provides a detailed account of the intellectual and moral ferment that characterized the era. This history is an essential resource for readers interested in the development of modern Hinduism, the history of South Asian reform, and the complex dialogue between Eastern and Western religious thought.
