A rare Upaniṣadic teaching on complete renunciation, inner freedom and steadfast abidance in the non-dual Self.

The Turīyātītāvadhūta Upaniṣad describes the nature and conduct of the accomplished Avadhūta who has passed beyond external identity, religious display, attachment, pride and the opposites of pleasure and pain, gain and loss, and honour and dishonour.

Beginning with a question addressed by Pitāmaha to Ādinārāyaṇa, the text presents the progressive stages of renunciation, from Kuṭīcaka and Bahūdaka to Haṃsa, Paramahaṃsa and the Turīyātīta Avadhūta. Its central concern is not the imitation of unusual external conduct, but the inward realization of dispassion, equanimity, freedom from ego and non-dual Self-knowledge.
