In Time Travelling in the Eastern Sierra, David Tuffley embarks on a 7,000-mile pilgrimage from Australia to the remote high-desert peaks of California, driven by a question that has haunted him since childhood: what can the oldest living things on Earth teach us about how to exist?
The journey begins among the Ancient Bristlecone Pines of the Eastern Sierra Nevada - trees that were already centuries old when the Pharaohs ruled Egypt, trees that do not merely survive harsh conditions but seem to become them. At 10,000 feet, in light snowfall, Tuffley sits beside one such patriarch and waits. What arrives in the silence is not what he expected.
From the bristlecones he moves through the vast, ceramic stillness of Death Valley, where a moment of satori - that sudden, wordless flood of illumination - arrests him roadside, dissolving the boundary between self and ancient landscape. Then south to the Trail of a Hundred Giants, where he steps inside the hollow heart of a sequoia and feels, briefly, what it might mean to measure time in millennia rather than minutes.
But this is more than a nature book. Threading through the mountains and missions of California's El Camino Real, Tuffley wrestles openly with memory, reincarnation, and the unsettling sensation of déjà vu so powerful it seems like evidence. A childhood flash of inexplicable knowing - at age three or four, alone in a Brisbane backyard - surfaces here as the emotional key to everything that follows. It sent him, eventually, across the Pacific.
Along the way he encounters the legendary Los Vigilantes Oscuros - the Dark Watchers of the Santa Lucia Mountains - and meditates at midnight beneath an ancient oak in a valley that Steinbeck himself once called sacred. The book moves between travel journal, philosophical meditation, and something harder to name: an honest reckoning with what lies beyond the noise of ordinary consciousness.
Tuffley writes with the precision of a scholar and the instincts of a mystic. His central argument is quietly radical: that silence is not the absence of sound, but the presence of meaning - and that we spend most of our lives too distracted to hear it. The bristlecones, the sequoias, the desert, the oak groves - they are not backdrops. They are teachers. The only question is whether we have the patience to sit still long enough to learn.
