Thus spoke Zarathustra, subtitled A book for all and for no one (in German: Also sprach Zarathustra. Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen), is a philosophical poem by Friedrich Nietzsche, published between 1883 and 1885.
Zarathustra is the Avestan name of Zoroaster, prophet and founder of Zoroastrianism, the ancient Persian religion. In German, it keeps this old form. Nietzsche chose it because he was the first to teach the moral doctrine of the two principles of good and evil. Thus, symbolically, Zarathustra himself abolishes his own doctrine: I was not asked - but should have been asked - what does the name Zarathustra mean in my mouth, in the mouth of the first immoralist, for it is just the opposite that makes the character enormously unique this Persia in history. Zarathustra was the first to see in the struggle between good and evil the true driving wheel of the course of things. The transposition into metaphysics of morality conceived as force, cause, end in itself, such is his work. But this question could basically already be considered as an answer. Zarathustra created that fatal error which is morality; therefore he must also be the first to recognize his mistake
