- Master aseptic technique, sterilization, and the sterile field, and defend the patient's wound against surgical site infection with a clear grasp of why each rule exists.
- Identify instruments by function rather than memorized name, and anticipate which one the next operative step requires.
- Follow the Step-Ahead Sequence Map in every chapter, naming for each critical moment the surgical step, the anticipation it demands, and the cue that triggers your next move.
- Manage energy devices, pneumatic tourniquets, and field medications safely, from dispersive-electrode placement to the immediate labeling that prevents wrong-medication error.
- Perform the surgical count and specimen handling to the standard that prevents retained items and misdirected diagnoses.
- Scrub the procedures of every specialty, general, gynecologic, genitourinary, orthopedic, ENT, ophthalmic, plastic, cardiothoracic, vascular, and neurosurgical, with the operative sequences mapped step by step.
