A father (James) and his seven - year - old daughter (Emma) experience the pain of losing a loved one. Actually, two loved ones. Emma feels the need to reconnect with her lost family and comes up with a plan, or rather an idea. There is supposed to be a stairway up to heaven, right?! She even manages to find it, but then there are more than just one and none of them leading to the right location.

Plus, there is her father who clearly has problems to understand life, at least in the opinion of his daughter. However, Emma can convince James to join her on an extraordinary mission to find the rest of their family.
