Overview of the Species The spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) is a small, semi-aquatic turtle native to North America. It is easily recognized by its dark carapace (upper shell) adorned with small, bright yellow spots. These distinctive markings give the species its common name and make it one of the most visually appealing turtles kept in captivity. Spotted turtles belong to the family Emydidae, which includes other well-known species such as box turtles and painted turtles. Adult spotted turtles are relatively small, typically reaching 3.5 to 5 inches in carapace length. Their manageable size makes them easier to house than many other turtle species. Sexual dimorphism is present in this species: Males tend to have longer, thicker tails and a concave plastron (underside of the shell).
Females have shorter tails and a flat plastron. Despite their charm, spotted turtles are listed as threatened or endangered in several parts of their range due to habitat loss, pollution, and illegal collection. For this reason, responsible ownership and support for captive-bred individuals are critical. In colder regions, they undergo brumation (reptilian hibernation) during winter months, typically from late fall to early spring.
