Natural History and Behavior The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the second-largest bird in the world by height, surpassed only by the ostrich. Native to Australia, emus are flightless, long-legged birds that belong to a group known as ratites, which also includes ostriches, cassowaries, rheas, and kiwis. Emus have evolved for survival in diverse and often harsh environments, ranging from grasslands to semi-arid deserts. Key natural traits: Size: Adult emus stand 5 to 6.5 feet tall and weigh between 90 to 120 pounds.
Speed and agility: Emus can run up to 30 miles per hour and are surprisingly agile.
Lifespan: In captivity, emus can live up to 20 years or more with proper care.
