Gargoyle geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) are a species of gecko native to the island of New Caledonia, located in the South Pacific. They are part of the Rhacodactylus genus, which includes other popular pet geckos such as crested geckos and leachianus geckos. Gargoyle geckos are named for the bony, horn-like protrusions on their heads, which resemble the stone gargoyles seen in architecture. These cranial bumps give them a distinct and memorable appearance.

Adult gargoyle geckos typically grow between 7 and 9 inches in length, including the tail, and weigh around 45 to 70 grams. They are long-lived reptiles, capable of living up to 15 to 20 years in captivity with proper care. Their coloration is highly variable and includes a wide range of morphs such as striped, blotched, and reticulated patterns in shades of red, orange, yellow, gray, brown, and white. This visual diversity has made them increasingly desirable in the reptile pet trade.
