Overview of Freshwater Angelfish Species
Freshwater angelfish are among the most iconic and widely kept species in the aquarium hobby. Their graceful shape, long flowing fins, and distinctive triangular bodies make them highly attractive centerpiece fish. Though commonly referred to simply as angelfish, they belong to the genus Pterophyllum, which is part of the cichlid family (Cichlidae). Freshwater angelfish are among the most iconic and widely kept species in the aquarium hobby. There are three recognized species within the Pterophyllum genus: 1. Pterophyllum scalare - The most common and widely bred species in the aquarium trade. Nearly all angelfish available in pet stores are scalare variants.
2. Pterophyllum altum - Known as the altum angelfish, this species is taller and more sensitive, with a more pronounced body height. It is harder to keep and breed in captivity.
3. Pterophyllum leopoldi - The rarest and smallest of the three. It has a more rounded head and is less commonly found in aquariums. Among these, Pterophyllum scalare has been selectively bred into a variety of colors and fin types, making it the most popular for home aquariums. Physical Characteristics Freshwater angelfish are best known for: Laterally compressed, triangular bodies that allow them to navigate narrow spaces in densely planted environments.
Long dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins that give them an elegant, flowing appearance.
A mature adult can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in length and 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in height, including fins.
Their body shape and large fins make them relatively slow swimmers compared to other fish of similar size.
