Este libro analiza el nacimiento de Inglaterra como estructura polÃtica y jurÃdica a partir del colapso del Imperio Romano en Britania y la posterior colonización normanda. Lejos de presentar la conquista de 1066 como un episodio aislado, la obra la sitúa dentro de un proceso europeo de larga duración, iniciado con la retirada romana, atravesado por la fragmentación postimperial y culminado en la reconstrucción del Estado medieval.
Tras el vacÃo dejado por Roma, Britania se transforma en un territorio de violencia dispersa, reinos frágiles y poder sin institucionalización. Las incursiones vikingas y el Danelaw profundizan esa descomposición, revelando la incapacidad de las estructuras anglosajonas para monopolizar la fuerza y la norma. En ese contexto, los normandos emergen no solo como conquistadores, sino como reorganizadores del poder.
La obra examina cómo Guillermo I y sus sucesores implantan un proyecto total de dominación: castillos, represión, redistribución de tierras, catastro, fiscalidad y justicia real. El Domesday Book es interpretado como arma polÃtica y no como simple registro administrativo. A través de la violencia fundacional, Inglaterra es transformada en una maquinaria de control territorial sin precedentes en Europa occidental.
El libro avanza luego hacia la consolidación del sistema normando, su crisis interna durante la AnarquÃa y la sÃntesis Plantagenet, donde Inglaterra se proyecta como potencia estructural europea. La herencia normanda se extiende hasta la Guerra de los Cien Años, conectando administración, guerra y nacimiento del Estado moderno.
Un eje central de la obra es el análisis comparativo del derecho. Se estudia la interacción entre derecho natural, derecho romano y derecho canónico, mostrando cómo Inglaterra desarrolla una sÃntesis operativa basada en costumbre, precedente y autoridad real, sin codificación total. El common law aparece asà como una tecnologÃa de poder surgida del colapso imperial, no como una anomalÃa cultural.
Este libro dialoga directamente con los estudios del autor sobre la caÃda de Roma y la persistencia de Bizancio, integrando las tres experiencias en una lectura unificada de la formación europea. Inglaterra no es presentada como excepción, sino como laboratorio histórico donde se reconstruye el Estado sin imperio.
Rigurosa, estructural y sin romanticismo, esta obra propone una interpretación clara: Europa nace no de la estabilidad, sino de la violencia organizada convertida en institución.
