Se analiza con detalle la fiscalidad, el ejército permanente, la tecnología militar, las fortificaciones y las estrategias diplomáticas, así como el papel de los pactos y alianzas entre musulmanes, cristianos y judíos. La obra explora la convivencia jerárquica de estas comunidades, la influencia de los judíos sefardíes en la ciencia, la filosofía y la traducción de Aristóteles, y la construcción de una civilización urbana, agrícola y administrativa que dejó huella en la arquitectura, el paisaje y la lengua española.
El recorrido histórico continúa con la fragmentación en reinos de Taifas, la llegada de los almorávides y almohades, la resistencia de los reinos cristianos del norte y el papel del Languedoc como corredor cultural europeo. Finalmente, se aborda la historia del Reino Nazarí de Granada, la Alhambra como símbolo de poder y arte, la guerra de frontera y la diplomacia que culminan en 1492 con la conquista de Granada, el Edicto de la Alhambra y la expulsión de los judíos sefardíes.
