Toda obra de teologÃa sistemática comienza con una convicción sobre el lenguaje. El lenguaje no es un recipiente neutral que transporta ideas de una mente a otra; es en sà mismo una dimensión de la realidad, moldeada por las comunidades, las historias y las experiencias de quienes lo usan. Cuando Dios decidió revelarse a sà mismo en la historia, eligió hacerlo a través de idiomas concretos -hebreo, arameo y griego-, cada uno con sus propias formas de organizar la realidad, de nombrar lo que importa y de señalar hacia lo que excede todo nombre.
Este libro está animado por la convicción de que la teologÃa cristiana no puede hacerse bien -no puede hacerse con fidelidad- sin una atención sostenida a los idiomas en los que Dios eligió hablar. No porque los idiomas originales sean un código secreto que desbloquea significados ocultos para el lector común, sino porque toda traducción, por excelente que sea, implica decisiones; y comprender esas decisiones, y el rango de significado que subyace en ellas, abre dimensiones de comprensión teológica que la traducción por sà sola no puede transmitir.
La estructura de esta obra sigue las divisiones clásicas de la teologÃa sistemática: la doctrina de Dios y la revelación, el ser humano y el pecado, Jesucristo, el EspÃritu Santo, la salvación, la iglesia, las cosas postreras y la vida cristiana. Dentro de cada división, el método es consistente: comenzar con las raÃces del Antiguo Testamento, trazar el desarrollo a través de la narrativa bÃblica, llegar al cumplimiento en el Nuevo Testamento, y prestar atención en todo momento a los términos clave en sus idiomas originales que iluminan lo que se está afirmando.
Todas las citas bÃblicas de este libro provienen de la Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI), elegida por su combinación de precisión y legibilidad. Cuando el idioma original abre dimensiones que la traducción no puede transmitir por completo, se introduce el término hebreo o griego correspondiente, con su transliteración, su rango de significado y su relevancia teológica.
El lector al que está dirigido este libro es cualquiera que tome la Biblia en serio y quiera pensar con más cuidado en lo que enseña: pastor, estudiante, lÃder laico o buscador sincero. La meta no es una cobertura académica exhaustiva, sino una formación teológica fiel: ayudar a los lectores no solo a saber más acerca de Dios, sino a conocer más a Dios, a escuchar con mayor claridad la voz de aquel que habla.
