Every work of systematic theology begins with a conviction about language. Language is not a neutral vessel for carrying ideas from one mind to another; it is itself a dimension of reality, shaped by the communities, histories, and experiences of those who use it. When God chose to reveal himself in history, he chose to do so through specific languages - Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek - each with its own ways of carving up reality, naming what matters, and gesturing toward what exceeds all naming.
This book is animated by the conviction that Christian theology cannot be done well - cannot be done faithfully - without sustained attention to the languages in which God chose to speak. Not because the original languages are a secret code that unlocks meanings hidden from ordinary readers. But because every translation, however excellent, involves choices; and understanding those choices, and the range of meaning that underlies them, opens dimensions of theological understanding that translation alone cannot carry.
The structure of this work follows the classical divisions of systematic theology: the doctrine of God and revelation, the human being and sin, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, salvation, the church, the last things, and the Christian life. Within each division, the method is consistent: begin with the Old Testament roots, trace the development through the biblical narrative, arrive at the New Testament's fulfillment, and attend throughout to the key terms in their original languages that illuminate what is being claimed.
All Scripture quotations in this book are from the New International Version (NIV), chosen for its combination of accuracy and readability. Where the original language opens dimensions that the translation cannot fully carry, the relevant Hebrew or Greek term is introduced with its transliteration, its range of meaning, and its theological significance.
The intended reader of this book is anyone who takes the Bible seriously and wants to think more carefully about what it teaches - pastor, student, lay leader, or serious seeker. The goal is not exhaustive academic coverage but faithful theological formation: to help readers not merely know more about God, but know God more - to hear, more clearly, the voice of the one who speaks.
