Cada libro de esta serie ha comenzado con una convicción sobre lo que realmente es su tema, porque la palabra en cuestión ha sido desgastada por un uso descuidado y casual. El Dios que Habla comenzó con la convicción de que la revelación no es un vago sentimiento espiritual sino la propia autorrevelación deliberada y misericordiosa de Dios a través de la historia y las Escrituras. El Dios que Responde comenzó con la convicción de que la fe no es el abandono de la razón sino su cumplimiento, capaz de resistir las preguntas más difÃciles que una era escéptica pueda plantear. Este libro comienza con una convicción paralela sobre la oración: que no es principalmente una técnica, un estado de ánimo o una disciplina privada practicada por sus beneficios psicológicos, sino comunión genuina y bidireccional con una Persona que está realmente presente, realmente escuchando, y realmente conmovida por lo que se le trae.
El método de este libro sigue el mismo patrón que establecieron sus dos volúmenes hermanos, adaptado para un propósito diferente. Cada uno de los treinta capÃtulos que siguen está construido en torno a una sola figura o pasaje de las Escrituras dedicado a la oración -algunos triunfantes, muchos desesperados, unos pocos casi silenciosos- tomados deliberadamente de toda la extensión del canon bÃblico en lugar de agruparse alrededor de un puñado de favoritos conocidos. Génesis y Apocalipsis, Éxodo y los Evangelios, los Salmos y las epÃstolas, los libros históricos y los profetas: cada sección importante de las Escrituras contribuye con al menos un retrato de la oración al mosaico más amplio de este libro.
Se abre con un epÃgrafe bÃblico y una breve reflexión introductoria, se mueve hacia una lectura cercana de la propia historia bÃblica, luego se amplÃa hacia una reflexión teológica sobre el patrón que esa historia establece, incorpora dos o tres ejemplos adicionales del mismo patrón en otras partes de las Escrituras, y ofrece una breve palabra sobre cómo se aplica el patrón a la vida ordinaria hoy. Cada capÃtulo cierra con una oración extensa, deliberadamente estructurada siguiendo el patrón que el propio Jesús dio a sus discÃpulos en el Padrenuestro, y entretejida con los cuatro movimientos clásicos de Adoración, Confesión, Acción de Gracias y Súplica -el método comúnmente conocido por sus siglas en inglés como ACTS, y que en este libro presentamos en español como ACAS-.
De manera crucial, estas oraciones de cierre no son ejercicios genéricos para mejorar la técnica de oración de alguien. Cada una está escrita para una situación humana especÃfica, tomada directamente de las circunstancias del ejemplo bÃblico de ese capÃtulo: una oración para alguien que está aprendiendo a orar por primera vez, una oración para el temor, una oración de confesión y culpa, una oración por sanidad, una oración bajo persecución, una oración por provisión, una oración por sabidurÃa en una decisión difÃcil, una oración por unidad en una relación fracturada, una oración por valentÃa bajo oposición, y dos docenas más. Mi esperanza es que este libro funcione no solo como un estudio sobre la oración sino como un compañero al que usted regrese una y otra vez -no leÃdo una vez de principio a fin y guardado en un estante, sino abierto en el capÃtulo que corresponda a lo que realmente esté cargando en un dÃa dado-.
No pretendo que estas treinta oraciones sean las únicas, ni siquiera las mejores, palabras disponibles para las situaciones que abordan. Las propias Escrituras resisten ese tipo de rigidez, ofreciendo tantas voces diferentes de oración como personas que oraron. Lo que sà creo, y lo que todo este libro está escrito para demostrar, es que el Dios que se encontró con Ana en su angustia, con ElÃas en su agotamiento, con Daniel en su exilio, y con Jesús en su propio GetsemanÃ, es el mismo Dios que se encuentra con usted
