They were called Sicarios-hired killers who became one of the defining instruments of the Colombian and Mexican drug wars.
Sicarios: The Hired Killers of the Colombian and Mexican Drug Wars traces the evolution of contract violence from the neighborhoods of MedellÃn to the cartel battlefields of Ciudad Juárez, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, and beyond.
Beginning with Colombia's cocaine boom, Antonios Valamontes reconstructs how the MedellÃn Cartel transformed neighborhood gunmen into an organized machinery of assassination. The narrative follows Los Priscos, the murder campaigns against judges, journalists, police officers, and political figures, the war over extradition, the killing of Luis Carlos Galán, Avianca Flight 203, the DAS bombing, the Search Bloc, Los Pepes, and the violent networks that survived Pablo Escobar.
The story then moves north to Mexico, where cartel enforcement evolved into increasingly militarized organizations. Los Zetas, Barrio Azteca, La LÃnea, Sinaloa enforcement groups, and CJNG reveal different models of recruitment, command, territorial control, prison organization, and professional killing.
Drawing on court records, extradition proceedings, government documents, investigative journalism, testimony, and scholarship, Sicarios goes beyond the mythology of the lone gunman. It examines the brokers, recruiters, prison leaders, commanders, corrupt officials, and criminal organizations that made contract murder possible.
Individual cases reveal who the killers were, how they entered the profession, whom they targeted, how their work was organized and financed, and what ultimately happened to them. Separate chapters examine prisons, juvenile recruitment, prosecution, extradition, community trauma, and the long institutional aftermath of cartel violence.
A documented catalog of tattoos, insignia, graffiti, and visual codes further examines the marks used by gangs and criminal organizations-while distinguishing genuine identifiers from symbols too often misinterpreted as proof of membership.
This is not a celebration of the Sicario. It is a history of the system that created him, employed him, replaced him-and left entire communities to live with the consequences.
