SEALORDS reconstructs the ambitious U.S.-South Vietnamese naval campaign that transformed the river war in the Mekong Delta between 1968 and 1971.
Drawing on official U.S. Navy and Army histories, command summaries, operational records, after-action reports, contemporary professional writing, memoirs, and later scholarship, Antonios Valamontes follows the campaign from Vice Admiral Elmo Zumwalt's reorganization of American naval operations through the creation of the major river barriers, the expansion of PBR and assault-craft operations, Sea Float and Solid Anchor, the Cambodian campaign, and the transfer of boats, bases, logistics, and command responsibility to the Republic of Vietnam Navy.
The book examines not only firefights and interdiction operations, but also the larger questions behind them: How effective were the barriers? How much could riverine forces actually stop? What did Vietnamization accomplish? And why did operational success in the Mekong Delta fail to determine the final outcome of the war?
