Cuvântul mandala provine din limba sanscrită şi înseamnă cerc magic. În unele religii, cum ar fi Hinduism şi Budism, sunt folosite pentru meditaţie şi contemplare.
Mandalele au o formă circulară şi au un punct de referinţă central. Prin înfăţişarea ei circulară, mandala reprezintă Universul, perfecţiunea. Reprezentări ale cercului există atât în jurul nostru, cum ar fi Soarele, Luna sau Pământul, cât şi sub forma cea mai mică, cea a celulelor din corpul uman.
Astfel, colorând o mandala, executantul are acces atât la Universul exterior (macrocosm), cât şi la cel interior (microcosm) cu toate trăirile şi provocările lui
După Carl Jung, mandala este un instrument de redescoperire a sinelui, de autocunoaştere. Prin concentrarea atenţiei asupra colorării unei mandale, problemele existenţiale şi cele de ordin material rămân în urmă, axându-ne pe câmpul spiritual, aducând echilibru interior. În acest proces se ajunge la o armonie şi la un veritabil transfer de informaţii între ego şi Sine, între conştient şi subconştient.
În terapie, desenul este folosit ca formă de exprimare a unor emoţii, traume sau conflicte interioare ale pacienţilor, ajutând la descifrarea lor. Prin colorarea acestor mandale, trăirile şi emoţiile îşi fac drum spre exterior, stimulând idei creatoare, linişte şi calm.
După Susanne F. Fincher, colorarea cercurilor ne transportă în timp spre o perioadă a copilăriei când redescopeream lumea prin desen. Era o perioadă lipsită de griji sau preocupări, când Sinele primar predomina asupra egoului. Mandala este astfel o hartă spre redescoperirea lumii noastre interioare, precum şi spre autovindecare.
Mandala este o reprezentare a Divinităţii, iar colorarea ei ne repune în contact cu Divinul din fiecare dintre noi, reîntregind Întregul din care toţi facem parte. Este o călătorie magică prin care ne deconectăm de lumea exterioară pentru a ne regăsi.
După finalizarea unei mandale, vă aşezaţi deoparte şi contemplaţi întreaga imagine în ansamblu, culorile folosite, iar apoi vă poziţionaţi mental în centrul ei şi vă lăsaţi inundaţi de starea de armonie, echilibru şi pace interioară pe care aceasta vi-o induce.
