The mechanical shaping of root canals embraces a set of trans-operative procedures with the core purpose of acting against microbial intracanal infection, with tooth retention as the ultimate target. Such procedures are based on technical, scientific and philosophical concepts that have evolved, developed and been tested since the seventeenth century. The field of endodontics has undergone tremendous changes from the use of SS files to NiTi and also in the manner in which these endodontic instruments are driven, i.e., in rotary and reciprocating motion. Continuous rotation involves a file spinning a full 360 degrees in one direction. Reciprocation uses an alternating back-and-forth motion, rotating clockwise (CW) then counter-clockwise (CCW). Each approach offers distinct advantages for cleaning and shaping teeth. Highly successful modern root canal procedure requires clinical evaluation of both the techniques.
