The term race, from which racism derives, is of uncertain origin and was introduced into European languages around the 16th century.
At the end of the seventeenth century, the debate developed on the morality of the slave trade between one side of the Atlantic and the other. For the first time, it was pointed out that blacks and whites shared common humanity.
The term race returned to be used about the relative technological backwardness of Africans, which was considered the result of their unhealthy living conditions. These behaviors were the basis of attempts to legitimize discrimination first and then slavery.
Although Charles Darwin's book The origin of the species (1859), which documented how development was produced by natural selection, revolutionized theories of differences between humans in science, it did not prevent a distorted use of the term race. It inspired a new form of racism, the so-called scientific racism, based on the idea that racial prejudice performs an evolutionary function.
Hundreds and thousands of people who were victims of racism could not live up to their desired life, and it still happens. Moreover, people keep being murdered or committing suicide because of racism.
