Sepsis is a medical emergency that can be life-threatening to the patient in the very short term. The variability of its clinical presentation and its pathophysiological complexity make it a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for primary care physicians. In septic conditions, the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score has been shown to identify patients at high risk of an adverse outcome following an infection. However, calculating the SOFA score requires several clinical and laboratory parameters (the Glasgow Coma Scale, mean arterial pressure, PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio, bilirubin level, creatinine level, and platelet count). As for the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), it has been proposed as a simple method for the early identification of patients with sepsis at risk of an adverse outcome, thereby encouraging the optimization of their initial management and reducing mortality. Therefore, the following question warrants consideration: Does the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio have prognostic value comparable to the SOFA score in patients with sepsis admitted to the emergency department?
