Cell biology is a sub-discipline of biology which attempts to study the structure and functions of cells. They are classified into prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells include bacteria and archaea. These organisms lack an enclosed cell nucleus and reproduce using binary fission. Eukaryotic cells can be unicellular or multicellular in nature. They include fungi, plant, protozoa and animals. The discipline of cell biology can be further divided into cell communication, cell metabolism, cell cycle, cell composition and biochemistry. Cell culture, cell fractionation and microscopy are some of the prominent techniques used for studying the cells. Cell biology often overlaps with various other fields such as molecular biology, genetics and medical microbiology. The book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of cell biology.
