O que é, afinal, um organismo vivo? Uma máquina bioquÃmica extremamente complexa, como nos ensinou a biologia do século XX, ou algo mais: uma estrutura de sentido, um sistema informativo capaz de manter a forma, a identidade e a finalidade ao longo do tempo? A biologia dos campos nasce desta questão radical e acompanha o leitor numa viagem que atravessa a ciência, a filosofia e as novas fronteiras do pensamento biológico.
Nas últimas décadas, os avanços da genética molecular e da bioquÃmica produziram resultados extraordinários, mas também revelaram os limites de um paradigma puramente reducionista. Explicar a vida como a soma de reações quÃmicas ou como a simples execução de um código genético já não basta para dar conta de fenómenos fundamentais: a forma, a coerência do organismo, a auto-organização, a capacidade de adaptação criativa e, em última análise, o significado biológico.
Este livro propõe uma mudança de perspetiva: considerar os organismos como estruturas informativas estabilizadas, sustentadas por campos de coerência que precedem e organizam as partes materiais individuais. Não se trata de uma fuga para o vago ou para o simbólico, mas de uma tentativa rigorosa de integrar contributos provenientes da fÃsica dos sistemas complexos, da biologia teórica, das neurociências e de uma releitura crÃtica das tradições vitalistas à luz dos conhecimentos contemporâneos.
Desde a crise do paradigma bioquÃmico clássico até ao problema por resolver da forma na biologia evolutiva, o texto mostra como a vida pode ser compreendida de forma mais eficaz se for concebida como um u um fenómeno de coerência não-local, em que o todo não é o resultado das partes, mas sim a sua condição de possibilidade. Nesta perspetiva, os campos biológicos não são metáforas sugestivas, mas sim instrumentos conceptuais para descrever como a informação se concretiza, como a energia se transforma em organização e como o organismo mantém a sua identidade dinâmica.
Esta visão tem implicações profundas também na forma como entendemos a saúde e a doença. A saúde surge como um estado de coerência global, enquanto a patologia se apresenta como uma fragmentação do campo, uma perda de harmonia informativa antes mesmo de ser uma avaria mecânica. Ao mesmo tempo, a vida é reinterpretada como um processo cognitivo difuso: cada organismo, no seu próprio existir, conhece, avalia e responde ao mundo.
A biologia dos campos abre um espaço de reflexão responsável, no qual a ciência e a metafÃsica voltam a dialogar sem se confundirem. Um convite a repensar a vida não apenas como um facto natural, mas como um acontecimento de sentido no universo, e o saber biológico como um conhecimento que implica, inevitavelmente, também uma escolha cultural e ética.
