This physician is commonly known as a doctor's doctor by their physician colleagues. For the first time, this book documents the field of Pathology, divided into four sections: What is pathology, Human tissue and the lab, The diagnosis, and Next steps for a patient. Who owns your tissue samples after a biopsy? What is in a Pathology report and what does it mean? How does a patient obtain a second opinion? Which doctor provides the Final Diagnosis? This handbook is ideal for cancer survivors, support groups, medical students, pre-medical students, and those pursuing any career in health care. Clinicians and other providers will gain insights for collaborating with their pathology colleagues to optimize patient care, and learn current and emerging use of biomarkers, molecular imaging, and diagnostics.
Pathologists are unseen medical doctors mistakenly referred to as the lab. Unbeknownst to patients who receive their care, these doctors make critical decisions that lead to determining a patient's treatment plan by providing a diagnosis and the name of the disease. The name defines what it is, and often the cause of the disease. Without the name to pinpoint what the patient has-the patient cannot get appropriate treatment. When an infant is born, the first thing we all do is name the child. This is the beginning of the child's life and identifies who they are. Without the name, there is no identity, symbolization, reference, description, and finally, no hope.
