Introduction
Polish Pensioners' Last Stand
Growing old is supposed to be peaceful.
That's what the brochures say.
A comfortable armchair. A cup of tea. The occasional game of bingo. Sundays in the park feeding pigeons that are somehow fatter than the people feeding them. A warm blanket, daytime television, and grandchildren who visit just often enough to remind you how little they understand your generation.
Whoever wrote those brochures had obviously never visited Hackney.
They had certainly never met Rudy Duda and Iwan Kowalski.
Officially, they are retired.
Unofficially, they are a public nuisance.
They have survived war, communism, immigration, factory work, rising inflation, impossible landlords, impossible governments, impossible neighbours and, perhaps most remarkably of all, more than thirty years of living together without killing one another.
That alone deserves a medal.
Instead, they receive Housing Benefit.
The two old Polish friends occupy a draughty council flat high above the East End of London, where the lifts rarely work, the heating has an ongoing disagreement with the boiler, and every letter that drops through the letterbox has the potential to ruin somebody's week.
Life hasn't exactly turned out as either of them imagined.
When they left Poland decades earlier, they dreamed of opportunity.
Instead they found paperwork.
Forms.
Benefits offices.
Waiting rooms.
Council departments that appeared to exist solely to transfer responsibility to another council department.
Britain promised a better life.
Nobody mentioned the endless queues.
Or the weather.
Especially the weather.
Hackney in November possesses a cold unlike anywhere else.
It doesn't simply sit outside.
It sneaks under doors.
It crawls through cracked window frames.
It settles into old bones and stubborn joints before refusing to leave until Easter.
The only reliable cure, according to Rudy, is a can of Polish lager.
According to Iwan, it's another can of Polish lager.
Medical science remains unconvinced.
Rudy and Iwan are the sort of friends only time can produce.
They have spent so many years insulting one another that affection has become almost impossible to recognise without subtitles.
Every conversation is an argument.
Every argument ends in laughter.
Every morning begins with someone refusing to fetch the post.
Neither would hesitate to defend the other.
