They say hope springs eternal. In Harry Hope's case, it mostly sprang out of nowhere, tripped over its own shoelaces, and crashed into a row of dustbins.
Harry was not a clever man. He was not sharp, or swift, or impressive in any way that job applications, neighbours, or the laws of physics generally appreciated. He was forty-two years of earnest eyebrows, hair that looked styled by a sudden gust of wind and a confused pigeon, and a smile so unguarded it practically invited trouble in for tea. Trouble is always accepted.
He lived in a world that ran on timetables, rules, and neatly filled-out forms. Harry lived in that same world, but viewed it through a lens permanently tilted at twenty degrees. He meant well-he meant exceedingly well. It was the execution that tended to go sideways, usually taking lampposts, parking meters, and perfectly innocent shrubbery along with it.
His steed was a Cadillac Sedan he called The Duchess: twenty-two feet of faded plum metal, rust freckles, and a turning circle that required permission from three counties and a minor act of parliament. To park her was to perform a minor miracle. To watch him park was to witness slapstick elevated to an art form. Bins toppled. Alarms sang. Bystanders crossed the street. Harry would emerge, dust on his sleeves, beaming like he'd landed a spacecraft. Bit lively today! he'd say. She's got spirit!
To the clerks at the Social Security office and the Job Centre, Harry was a permanent fixture: the man who filled forms in the wrong ink, forgot his ID half the time, and left every appointment with more stamps than prospects. They shook their heads. They sighed. They called him a fool.
Harry didn't mind being called a fool. He knew what he was: a widower doing his level best, with two children counting on him. Lila, thirteen, sharp as a tack and already convinced her father was a walking comedy routine. And Toby, six months old, round and cheerful and blessedly unaware his father had once accidentally dried the baby bottles in the oven-It was warm! Sterilised! Innovative!
He wasn't chasing glory. He wasn't chasing fortune. He was chasing work. Any work. Honest work. Work that might keep the rent paid, the cupboards stocked, and Lila from rolling her eyes so hard she strained something.
Every morning he polished his shoes, ironed his shirt over a warm radiator, and climbed behind the wheel of The Duchess with one simple vow: Today, I shall be sensible.
And every day, without fail, sensible people would take one look at Harry Hope, turn on its heel, and flee.
But here is the secret the world had yet to learn: Harry Hope wasn't a fool. He was something far more rare. He was a man who stumbled, apologised, and kept going. Who knocked things over, picked them up, and somehow-accidentally on purpose-left things better than he found them.
This is the story of how the man everyone wrote off drove his giant, rusting boat of a car straight into the most important job of all: being exactly who he was.
