Aristophanes' Peace is a classical Athenian comedy that satirizes war and celebrates the restoration of harmony through wit, absurdity, and political insight.
In Peace, first performed in 421 BCE during the Peloponnesian War, Aristophanes presents the story of Trygaeus, an ordinary Athenian who grows weary of endless conflict and resolves to take matters into his own hands. Mounting a fantastical journey to the heavens, he seeks to rescue the goddess Peace, who has been imprisoned by the gods, and restore her to the world of men. What follows is a lively and imaginative comedy filled with satire, humor, and pointed commentary on the political and social consequences of war.
Blending farce with serious reflection, Aristophanes uses exaggerated situations and sharp dialogue to critique the institutions and attitudes that perpetuate conflict. At the same time, the play offers a vision-however comic-of renewal, prosperity, and the simple pleasures of life in times of peace. As with many of Aristophanes' works, the comedy remains rooted in its historical moment while addressing themes that retain universal relevance.
This edition presents the text of Peace in a clear and accessible format, preserving the vitality of Aristophanes' language while making the play available to modern readers.
