The Knights is one of Aristophanes' most biting political comedies, offering a satirical portrait of Athenian politics during the height of the Peloponnesian War. First performed in 424 BC, the play is a fierce and humorous attack on the influential Athenian demagogue Cleon, whom Aristophanes caricatures through the figure of an unscrupulous servant manipulating the affairs of the state.
In the play, the citizens of Athens are represented by an elderly master named Demos, who is surrounded by competing servants eager to gain influence over him. A vulgar and manipulative character rises to power by flattering Demos and exploiting the fears and ambitions of the public. His dominance is eventually challenged by an unlikely rival-a humble sausage-seller-whose rise to prominence exposes the absurdities and corruption of political life.
Blending sharp political commentary with exuberant comic invention, The Knights exemplifies the bold spirit of Old Comedy in ancient Athens. Aristophanes' play remains a remarkable example of classical satire, revealing how humor and theatrical spectacle could be used to critique public life and challenge the excesses of political power.
