Rather than positing a singular or unbroken origin, the book approaches Palestine as a stratified historical society shaped by local continuity, imperial domination, religious transformation, migration, acculturation, and political rupture. Drawing on archaeology, ancient textual traditions, inscriptions, Ottoman records, Mandate archives, demographic evidence, international law, genetic studies, and the history of religions, it critically examines national narratives that reduce the land to a linear account of replacement or exclusive possession.
A central analytical distinction structures the study: conquest does not necessarily entail demographic replacement. From Canaanite cities, Israelite and Judahite societies, Hellenistic and Roman rule, Byzantium, Islamization, the Crusades, Ottoman administration, the British Mandate, and the post-1967 order, Palestine emerges as an inhabited society repeatedly reconfigured by changing systems of power, law, language, religion, and identity.
The book engages recent genetic research with methodological caution: DNA may illuminate patterns of regional continuity and admixture, but it cannot establish political title, moral hierarchy, or exclusive historical ownership.
