When I began there were no computers, no pharmacy technicians, no third-party payers, no PBMs, and hospital pharmacies were profit centers for their owners. Five times during my career my job has been sold out from under me because conditions in the profession changed. This forced me to learn how to learn to take care of myself. After every change I was able to earn more than I did before the change. However, the pace of change is now faster than ever before. Are you ready to handle a drastic career disruption right now? The reality is that the pharmacist job market is soft and it will be up to you to create the income you need to fund your own retirement, while saving for your kids college expenses and taking care of your aging parents. During the 1990's and up until 2007 the pharmacist shortage created a seller's market for pharmacy labor. Wages rose, bonuses increased and pharmacists assumed this would last forever. During that market the employers paid more than they wanted to to keep their businesses open. Now the market has shifted and pharmacists are in oversupply. This means that wages will deteriorate unless you figure out a better way to increase your income.
