Oppositional Defiant Disorder, commonly called ODD, involves a continuing pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior, and sometimes vindictive behavior.
But a diagnosis should never become the child's entire identity.
A child with ODD can also be creative, loving, funny, intelligent, talented, determined, compassionate, curious, and capable of growth.
This book was written to help families understand both sides of the picture.
The difficult behavior is real.
So is the child behind the behavior.
Throughout these chapters, we will look at what ODD is, how symptoms may appear, how professionals diagnose it, what factors may contribute to it, and what parents can do at home.
We will also discuss school challenges, anger management, discipline, positive reinforcement, related conditions such as ADHD and anxiety, therapy, treatment, faith, and long-term hope.
This is not a book about blaming parents.
It is not a book about blaming children.
And it is not a book that suggests every behavioral difficulty can be solved simply by becoming stricter.
Children need boundaries.
They also need understanding.
They need consequences.
They also need encouragement.
They need accountability.
They also need opportunities to learn better skills.
For Christian families, there is another important part of the journey.
Faith.
The Bible contains powerful lessons about patience, wisdom, self-control, correction, forgiveness, listening, anger, and family relationships.
Those principles can provide encouragement and direction.
At the same time, ODD is a behavioral health condition that may require professional evaluation and treatment.
Prayer and professional help do not have to compete.
Parents can pray and see a counselor.
Families can study Scripture and use evidence-based behavioral strategies.
A child can receive treatment while being surrounded by faith, love, and Christian encouragement.
This book will never suggest that a child has ODD because the child does not love God enough.
It will never suggest that a parent's faith is weak because the family needs professional help.
