Public school governance has evolved dramatically over the past 65 years. The author actively lived through the arc of school reforms as a teacher and administrator in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The evolution occurred due to the enactment of federal and state legislation, as well as local district policies. But changes also occurred due to constitutional changes by the will of the people through the initiative process and the vision of inspired activist school leaders in constituent groups. Our history teaches us many things, but it mainly teaches us that in our democracy, none of us is as smart as all of us.
