What if the policies promising equity in America's schools are actually hurting the very students they claim to help?
Across the country, schools and colleges have embraced diversity, equity, and inclusion. But what happens when equity means lowering academic standards, abandoning merit, weakening discipline, dividing students by race, and silencing those who dare to object?
In The Great Equity Epidemic, Lance Izumi and Wenyuan Wu go beyond the slogans to reveal what DEI and equity policies look like in the lives of real people.
A high school student watches academic rigor disappear as achievement is de-emphasized and expectations fall.
A mother fights back after her son challenges DEI instruction-and is thrown out of class.
A school board member takes on her district's powerful equity establishment, helps transform the board, and ultimately overturns its equity policy.
A college professor challenges DEI at his institution, loses his job-and takes the fight to court.
And they are not alone.
Through gripping first-hand accounts from students, parents, teachers, school staff, school board members, and college professors, Izumi and Wu expose how the drive for equal outcomes can collide with academic excellence, individual achievement, parental rights, free expression, and equal opportunity.
But this is not simply a book about what has gone wrong.
It is about people who fought back-and won.
Provocative, revealing, and ultimately hopeful, The Great Equity Epidemic shows that parents, educators, students, and school leaders do not have to accept the status quo.
The equity epidemic has spread through American education. This book introduces the people determined to stop it.
