The book chapter focuses on the formulation and evaluation of mucoadhesive buccal tablets of terbutaline sulphate for improved management of bronchial asthma. Conventional oral drug delivery systems often face limitations such as first-pass hepatic metabolism, enzymatic degradation, and variable gastrointestinal absorption, which reduce drug bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. To overcome these challenges, the study explores mucoadhesive buccal drug delivery systems (MBDS) as an alternative route for systemic drug delivery. The buccal route offers several advantages, including direct absorption through the buccal mucosa, avoidance of first-pass metabolism, rapid onset of action, and improved patient compliance. In this work, mucoadhesive buccal tablets of terbutaline sulphate were formulated using suitable polymers, particularly natural polymers such as guar gum, to enhance adhesion and sustain drug release. The formulation process involved optimising the polymer concentration to achieve desirable swelling behaviour, mucoadhesive strength, and controlled drug release.
