Ricinus communis L. and Euphorbia hirta Linn. are medicinal plants widely used in traditional medicine for managing urinary disorders, including urolithiasis (kidney stones). Phytochemical screening of these plants reveals the presence of diverse bioactive constituents such as flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, steroids, and glycosides, which are known to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. Experimental studies have demonstrated that extracts of Ricinus communis and Euphorbia hirta exhibit promising anti-urolithiatic activity by dissolving or inhibiting the formation of calcium oxalate crystals, the principal component of most kidney stones. Their nephroprotective and diuretic effects further support the elimination of stone-forming constituents while protecting renal tissues from injury. Collectively, these findings suggest that both plants are promising natural sources of anti-urolithiatic agents and warrant further phytochemical characterisation, mechanistic studies, and clinical investigations to validate their therapeutic potential in the management of kidney stones.
