MADHUMOZHI THIRUPPA VOLUME 10
FROM SOVEREIGNTY TO ABIDING
Volume 10 completes the journey from negation (illai illai, Vol. 1) to sovereignty (iṟaimai, Vol. 9). If Volume 9 answered How does one attain sovereignty?-through recognizing Order = Sovereignty and practicing love as restraint-Volume 10 addresses: How does one abide in sovereignty once attained?
These 27 verses (V.489-515) unfold through three movements deepening Volume 9's teachings into stabilized realization:
I. The Practice Beyond Practice (V.489-495)
Summā (V.489)-effortless abidance where differentiation (pētakam) ceases. Where Volume 9 taught active restraint, Volume 10 reveals the deeper ground: lucid non-fabrication where the practitioner dissolves into practice itself. V.490 introduces allamai (is-not-ness)-pregnant void-potency underlying manifestation, the groundless ground from which Order/Sovereignty emerges.
II. Architecture of Consciousness (V.496-508)
Mapping subtle structures: the absent outside (illāp puṟam, V.496) trapping consciousness; time as emptiness-released (V.498); liberation as void encountered when selfhood knows itself (V.499); upward-downward wisdom (kīḻ-mēl ñāṉam, V.508).
III. The Illaṉ Sequence (V.509-515)
Seven verses teaching how to become like Śiva by abiding in illaṉ (the non-fixed one):
- V.509: Becoming illaṉ-freedom from limiting attributions
- V.510: Finding allaṉ (unfixer) in illamai-abiding IN the churn
- V.511: Manifest as void's scripture-appearance as reality's self-expression
- V.512: Illaṉ's heart is Śiva-void-potency as sat-cit-ānanda
- V.513: Without illaṉ, nothing exists-things ARE illaṉ appearing
- V.514: In illaṉ, hatred/pride impossible-love inevitable
- V.515: Abiding in illaṉ-the final great austerity ending all practice
The Teaching Complete:
Volume 9: Restraint (active discipline). Volume 10: Abiding (effortless rest). Volume 9: Attaining sovereignty. Volume 10: Being the sovereign one.
Together, Volumes 9-10 form a complete manual: from understanding (V.470-479) through systematic teaching (V.480-486) to effortless abiding (V.489) and final establishment (V.515).
When āṇavam (ego-fixation) dissolves through abiding in illaṉ, rebirth's disease ends-not through cessation but transformation. Koshas integrate, perpetual intelligence and bliss establish, action continues without appropriation. This is jīvanmukti-living liberation, sovereignty embodied.
Volume 9 showed how to become. Volume 10 shows how to be.
