The Resistenza movement during the Second World War - historically one of the most widespread and impressive resistance movements against Fascism and the Nazi occupation - is still regarded today as a significant and legendary event in Italian history. The first part of this work describes key realities and aspects of Italian fascism, the Nazi occupation, the prevailing political circumstances of the time, the Italian Resistance and the partisan struggle as a 'fenomeno diffuso'. A definition of the Neorealismo genre, which shaped the post-war Italian film and literary landscape, rounds off this historical section. The second part contains the key biographical details of the authors Renata Viganò, Beppe Fenoglio and Italo Calvino, and the directors Roberto Rossellini and Carlo Lizzani. One work from each of their Neorealist bodies of work is analysed. In addition to a comparison of the literary works on the Resistance, this section includes a critical examination of two film adaptations of this genre, with a view to highlighting the differences and similarities between film and literature.
