Two patients use the same hospital room within twenty-four hours. The first has a contagious intestinal infection, and microscopic particles reach the bathroom, the bed controls, and the chair arms. When that patient leaves, the room looks ordinary. Whether the next patient ever meets those organisms depends on the person who cleans that room, on the product they select, and on whether anyone gave them time to use it correctly.
Infection moves along a chain of six links: an infectious agent, a reservoir, a portal of exit, a mode of transmission, a portal of entry, and a susceptible host. Break one link and the sequence stops. The Invisible Army: First Line of Defense is built around that chain, and around the link Environmental Services breaks many times a day: the contaminated environment itself.
That work is technical. It takes knowledge of how organisms survive on surfaces, which disinfectant is approved for which situation, how long a surface has to stay visibly wet, what order a room is cleaned in, and when to stop and ask a nurse before opening a door. The word housekeeper does not describe any of it.
The book is written for two readers. The first is the EVS professional who wants the science behind procedures they already follow. The second is anyone working near that role who has not seen it clearly: nurses and infection preventionists, managers setting staffing and turnaround targets, leaders approving training budgets, and patients and families who want to know how a room is made safe.

A missed surface is often a system problem rather than a personal one. A room released late, a high-touch area hidden behind equipment, a disinfectant that was not stocked, or one worker covering too many rooms defeats good training every time. This book treats an audit as a way to find those causes, not a way to rank people.
Successful EVS work produces no visible event. The contamination never reached anyone, the room was ready, and recovery continued. Their work is visible, if you know what to look for.
This book offers one perspective on environmental services and infection prevention, not a substitute for facility-specific training or oversight by qualified infection-control professionals. Anyone responsible for actual cleaning and disinfection decisions should follow their own facility's protocols and regulations.
