This great hymn comprised of a hundred and eight names of Ganesha is found in Vinayaka Tantra. This text establishes lord Ganesha as the supreme reality and deals with the worship of different forms of Ganesha. The text is in the form of a conversation between Lord Shiva and Parvati.

The glory of Ganesha's hundred and eight names hymn is also praised in Ganesha Purana. By chanting Ganesha ashtottara shatanama stotra and sprinkling sanctified water on Somakanta - the king of Devanagara in the province of Saurashtra who was affected by leprosy by the effect of his past life sins and forced out the sin spirit from his body by the power of this hymn.

Before putting his efforts to destroy the Tripura demon, lord Shiva the husband of goddess Parvati, praised lord Ganesha with these hundred and eight epithets.

One who worships Lord Ganesha with the same hymn with devotion by offering durva grass, shami leaves, mandaara flowers in the holy feet of Ganesha, attains all the desires and becomes free from all kinds of obstacles.
