Homo Cosmicus posits that while humans are biologically blueprinted for Earth-specifically its gravity, atmospheric composition, and 24-hour circadian rhythms-we are currently in the midst of a next great leap. Morissen argues that our historical evolution has been a cradle, but as we venture further into space, these biological ties become a cage that must be transcended through technology and intentional evolution.
Homo Cosmicus is structured across 13 chapters that move from the past to a speculative future:
- The Terrestrial Legacy: The early chapters detail how gravity sculpted bipedalism, bone density, and the cardiovascular system. It highlights the biological fault lines exposed by early spaceflight, such as muscle atrophy and radiation damage.
- The Technological Bridge: Morissen discusses how current technology (pressurized suits, life support) acts as a temporary cocoon for human frailty, but suggests that long-term survival requires a more permanent synthesis of biology and engineering.
- The Genesis of Homo Cosmicus: A significant portion of the book focuses on the intentional evolution of the species. This includes gene editing, synthetic biology, and cybernetic enhancements designed to help humans thrive in microgravity and high-radiation environments.
