This gamified storytelling, while commercially successful, reduced the complexity of human experience to mechanical progression, emotional stoicism, and individual conquest.
The book then traces a transformative counter-movement termed de-gamification, wherein contemporary authors are consciously rejecting these video game-inspired conventions in favor of richer literary forms.
