Sable, bonded to a starving and unstable Solace, cannot flee back into secrecy. She also refuses to become queen, saint, or weapon. Instead, she chooses the harder path: reach the spark-touched before the factions do, sever or quiet the crown-fragments, and protect the living proof that death need not be owned. Tavi's knowledge of Korrin mechanisms, Syth's underworld routes, and Jorren's battered honor become essential, but every ally carries consequences. Solace's hunger risks turning rescue into devastation. Sable's gift still costs memory. And Kest, fevered, injured, and still marked by Odran's wounded oath, knows the claimant networks well enough to save them-while remaining a danger Sable cannot fully trust.
When Odran reappears, no longer merely a polished political manipulator but a breath-altered claimant able to awaken fragments of imperial command in spark-touched bodies, the conflict escalates from chaos to war. Conclave priests declare the sparks a succession plague caused by Sable. Ulm Rask and the Korrin vault-lords seek to seize both Sable and the afflicted before the deeper vault secrets surface.
As the crew moves from Reach to Reach, each rescue reveals that the crown-oath did not simply break outward-it cracked downward. The Hollow beneath the Reaches is listening through old dragon bone, and the imperial war may be only the surface consequence of a much older prison failing. Sable must decide whether a broken crown can be made harmless, whether freedom can survive without a throne to enforce it, and whether love can exist beside Kest when his body may still be turned against her.
